Why Does the Solver Mix—and What Should You Do With That?

Understand mixed actions, why two choices can share EV, how to simplify frequencies, and how to practice without becoming predictable.

The solver says “call 62%, 3-bet 38%,” and somehow that feels less helpful than a clean answer. The good news is that a mix usually means both choices are close. Your real job is to understand what pushes the hand toward one side.

The short answer

Learn the pure actions around the mixed hand first. Then use a simple random method if the spot matters often, or choose the easier action when the EV difference is tiny. Do not copy an exact percentage without copying the assumptions behind it.

Three useful words

A mixed strategy uses more than one action with the same hand. A pure action uses one action every time. Indifference means the choices earn almost the same EV, which is why a solver can split between them.

Ace-five suited can call or 3-bet. Pick one, then change a single detail—the opener's size or the rake—and predict which direction the mix should move.

Mixing protects multiple ranges

If every strong hand bets, checks become weak. If every suited ace 3-bets, calls lose nut-flush coverage. Mixing places useful combinations in more than one branch so opponents cannot attack an action automatically.

The range reason comes before the random number.

Similar EV creates the boundary

When call and 3-bet EV are nearly equal, small assumption changes can flip the preferred action. Rake, size, stack depth, and opponent tendencies all matter. A solver frequency is therefore more fragile than a pure action with a large EV gap.

Focus study on why the options are close.

Randomize in a usable way

You can map suit combinations to actions, use the second hand of a clock, or use a randomizer. The method matters less than preserving the target frequency without introducing visible patterns.

For a 25% action, assign one suit combination or one quarter of random numbers to it. Keep the mapping simple enough to execute.

Simplify low-cost mixes

Humans do not need to reproduce every 53/47 output. Group similar combos and choose pure actions when the EV loss is tiny. Preserve mixes with strategic importance: they protect a branch, cover future runouts, or prevent a clear exploit.

Against an opponent with a known leak, abandon balance deliberately. The exploit changes the action EVs and can turn a mix into a pure choice.

Rule of thumb: Learn why the solver mixes, preserve the range function, and simplify only after checking the EV cost.

Practice the pure neighbors

After finding a mixed hand, inspect the slightly stronger and weaker combinations around it. Identify which property turns one neighbor into a pure call and another into a pure raise or fold. The boundary teaches more than the percentage because it remains useful when rake, position, or size changes the exact frequency.
